This lethargic feeling can creep up on anyone and make you feel continuously worn out and run down. Fortunately, this is something that can be changed with a few healthy lifestyle decisions. When you’re dragging your lifeless self around, stay away from foods and drinks that will only worsen your situation. Avoid dehydrating beverages with too much caffeine and especially most energy drinks (there is nothing of any nutritional value there). Replace them with water and natural fruit juices instead. Staying hydrated is an absolute necessity to maintain a healthy, high-energy lifestyle. Additionally, eat more fruits and vegetables instead of fatty, greasy fast food. Experiment with your diet, substitute a fruit smoothie for your afternoon soda, for example. Your energy level and caloric intake are directly linked, so make sure that the calories that you do consume are going to help you rather than sap your energy levels further!

There are many foods, drinks and other tips that can provide the boost needed to get you moving and stimulate your brain activity. Replacing your normal midday snack with an apple is a fun, healthy alternative full of vitamins and natural energy to get you going. Furthermore, foods with complex carbs (things with whole wheat for example) provide more sustainable energy than a candy bar. Green tea is a great replacement for coffee – still caffeinated – but far better for your body. Chewing gum actually stimulates your body and can boost your heart rate. This can be a much healthier stimulant than that 5 hour energy drink you’ve started to rely on. Correct posture and proper breathing patterns also aid in overall well being and energy levels – so sit up straight and take a deep breath!

As cliché as it sounds, we all need to exercise. A sedentary lifestyle simply sucks the energy out of you. The National Institute of Health recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Getting the heart pumping makes you feel better now and will even help you live longer. The runner’s high is no myth, get out and push yourself and feel the benefits of a more active lifestyle. If you don’t have a good running route available or the weather isn’t permissible, get a treadmill and put on some tunes and run to your heart’s content!  Running is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea, so find something fun and interesting that fits your lifestyle – the key is that it gets your heart rate up for a while!

It takes a conscious effort to live a healthy lifestyle, but the benefits you get from exercising and eating well far outweigh the alternative. Make time to exercise and take care of yourself, not just for the immediate glorification, but the long term benefits of your health. Exercise, combined with proper hydration and good meals might be just what you need to make you feel alive again.
